When Abraham Lincoln was President his son asked him to spare the life of a turkey that was supposed to be dinner. Lincoln decided to let the Gobbler live. In 1947 Harry Truman issued the first presidential pardon to a National Thanksgiving Turkey. This established a tradition that has been observed each year since, with a White House ceremony and proclamation issued by the Presdent to save a turkey.
This year there was a departure from the norm, as Joe Biden pardoned a 41 pound turkey named Peach, a 40 pounder named Blossom, and the biggest turkey of all, a 180 pounder named Hunter, and all three fowls were officially free.
