That’s A Wrap

Football season is over. The good news is that Baseball season is here - pitchers and catchers have reported and spring training has begun. Of course this means more of Coot’s musings will be about my favorite sport, but I do have a few final thoughts on the Super Bowl.

I had predicted the Seahawks would win 28-20. Almost nailed the Seattle score, but didn’t expect the total dominance by their defense. It wasn’t really as close as the 2 late (or too late, if you prefer) New England touchdowns made the final score of 29-13 sound. It seemed at times that the Seahawks had an extra man or two playing defense.

I had also predicted that running back Kenneth Walker would be the game’s MVP, and he did, but you could have made a case for almost any of the members of “The Dark Side” defense. You also could have named kicker Jason Myers MVP. The first player to score 200 points in a season accounted for 17 of the teams 29 points and was the first to kick 5 field goals in a Super Bowl game. And don’t forget punter Michael Dickson. He averaged 47.3 yards per punt, and pinned the Pats inside their own 6 yard line three times!

Coaches like to talk about their team playing complementary football. That doesn’t mean

“You look nice today” or “That’s a nice suit you’re wearing”. It means that the offense, defense, and special teams all played well. The Seattle performance Sunday was certainly complementary.

Sam Darnold was drafted in 2018, along with Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson. Bet you didn’t think he would be the first in that group to win a Super Bowl. You have to admire his resilience- the Seahawks are his 5th team- but he has found a home in Seattle. My favorite thing about Sam was how he credited his parents with instilling in him the confidence he needed to succeed.

It was interesting that both coaches were named Mike, and they both defeated coaches named Sean in the previous round.

If your first name is DeMarcus, a good strategy is to play for the Cowboys, then move to another team late in your career. You will then get a Super Bowl ring! It worked for DeMarcus Ware , who went to Denver, and Demarcus Lawrence, who is now celebrating in Seattle.

The shirtless guy who somehow got on the field and caused a delay late in the game may have run for more yards than the Patriots.

Watch for the next post. As the great Mark Holtz said - “It’s baseball time in Texas!”

That’s one man’s opinion - What’s yours?
