Last week I was prepared to conduct an autopsy on the Dallas Cowboys but the patient is still alive. In a historically crazy fourth quarter, they managed to upset the Washington Commanders (also known as the Redskins with no reservations), then followed that up with a win over the New York Football Giants on Thanksgiving Day. It is amusing that so many sports commentators add “football “ when they refer to the Giants. Most of the people listening aren’t as old as me, so they don’t remember when there was a baseball team called the Giants who played in the Polo Grounds. They moved to San Francisco in 1958 so they wouldn’t have to travel as far to continue their rivalry with the hated Trolley Dodgers.
Speaking of San Francisco, if you had predicted that the 49’ers and Cowboys would have identical records after 12 games, I’ll bet you didn’t think it would be 5-7! The red hot Cowboys now have a pair of two game win streaks this season, but they each have an asterisk because each “streak” includes a victory over the Giants. That franchise is as bad as the Cowboys. NY finally gave up on Daniel Jones and his 160 million dollar contract after deciding to pay him instead of Saquon Barkley (ouch). Now they’re limping to the finish line with backup quarterbacks. There is no truth to the rumor they tried to lure Phil Simms out of retirement. His fluffy hair wouldn’t fit under a helmet.
The difference in the future of the Giants and the Cowboys? New York can clean house and start over with new coaches and a new GM. Dallas will still be in Jerry’s world. The Giants got rid of their Jones - the Cowboys still have their Jones.
That’s one man’s opinion - what’s yours?
